Life’s always a beach here, and there are plenty of beaches to choose from
The Chiapas coast is full of beaches that feel like paradise on earth. Feel free to leave all of your stress and worries behind and take in the beauty of Chiapas. Most beaches are open to the sea, and you can choose from tons of aquatic sports including surfing, snorkeling, diving, etc. There are plenty of beaches to choose from including Barra San Simon, Chocohuital Beach, Heaven’s Mouth, Puerto Arista, Barra de San José, the Blue Beach, Barra Zacapulco, El Ballenato, Palo Blanco Estuary, Puerto Chiapas, the Beautiful Beach, or our favorite, the San Benito Beach.
Just remember to do your research before you choose where to go in order to plan your trip. Although the beaches are highly recommended, some have more limited access than others, and you’ll have to plan your accommodations accordingly.
The Palenque Ruins
There are few archaeological sites that have the ability to amaze you more, the closer you get to them. Palenque is one of those sites. The impressive and intricate buildings and pyramids of ancient Mayan culture are awe-inspiring. In fact, the Palenque ruins are so amazing that the United Nations named them a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
You can visit the ruins with a guided tour, explore on your own, or experience the cultural exhibitions in the museums. And while we’re on the subject of Palenque…
The Agua Azul Waterfalls
These waterfalls are a must-see if you’re looking to get in touch with nature while enjoying the scenery. Take a dip in the lagoons formed from the waterfalls created by the nearby river system. Just like the name suggests, the water here is a stunning turquoise color that comes from the salts that flow through the different areas of the park.
We recommend you bring a cover for your phone and your favorite swimsuit so you can take a dip (and an Instagram-worthy pic!)
San Cristóbal de las Casas
If your budget and vacation time permit, San Cristóbal de las Casas is another must-see in Chiapas.
Considered to be the most “Magical of the Magical Villages in Mexico,” San Cristobal de las Casas is everything and more that you can expect from the multicultural heart of Chiapas. You’ll find culture, art, and you’ll fall in love with everything Mexico has to offer.
Wherever you look, the rustic architecture frames the incredible amenities that you’d find in a tourist center and more. With a great variety of restaurants, hotels, neighborhoods, and fascinating monuments, tours in and outside of San Cristóbal de las Casas (with some tours that include one or more places that are already on this list), convenience stores, luxury shopping, and much more.
El Chiflón Waterfalls
Relax and feel refreshed along the San Vicente river, a natural wonder in its own right.
Don’t forget to bring a change of clothes, your swimsuit, and sunscreen, and prepare to be amazed by the waterfalls with names like “The Sign,” “The Angel Wing,” “The Rainbow,” and “The Young Woman.” You’ll also have the opportunity to swim in one of the stunning turquoise natural pools that form at the base of each waterfall.
You’re welcome stay and re_charge with a refreshing breeze and beautiful scenery at the first few waterfalls, but we definitely recommend you take the half mile walk to see them all. The main waterfall, named the “Bride’s Veil” is over 360 feet tall is the perfect place to take a selfie and create memories that will stay with you.
Tuxtla Gutiérrez is the capital of Chiapas and is definitely the busiest city in the state. Here, tradition and nature intermingle in the hotels, restaurants, malls, and luxury shopping. This tradition-filled cosmopolitan city is a haven for city lovers.
When you visit Chiapas, we suggest you visit Tuxtla Gutierrez at least once or make it your home base to visit other destinations. You won’t regret it.
Tuxtla Gutierrez also has plenty of historical and cultural sites where you can experience Chiapas culture and re_charge your energy so you can continue to enjoy your trip. We suggest visiting the Chiapas Regional Museum, the Chiapas Polyforum, the Marimba Park, and the iconic San Marcos Cathedral.
Chiapa de Corzo
If you’ve ever been fascinated by Mexican history and want to take a trip back in time, we highly recommend the Chiapa de Corzo cultural festival in one of the most magical cities in the state.
Located only 15 minutes away from Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapa de Corzo is a destination full of tradition where you can experience thousands of years of history unfold before your very eyes. The people are friendly, the fashion is colorful and beautiful, the Spanish architecture is full of enchanting details inspired by dozens of 14th-century artistic styles, and the cuisine is nothing short of extraordinary.
After a long day of walking and Chiapas heat, all you have to do to cool off is ask for a glass of the delicious ancient drink “Pozol,” and enjoy your vacation.
