Practiced around the world, the increasingly popular sport of surfing has a natural home in Mexico. The country’s many Pacific Coast beaches offer the perfect conditions to hop on a board and ride the waves.

A brief history of surfing

Although its precise origin is a topic of debate, the sport has been praciticed in various forms for hundreds of years, from Peru to Tahiti and throughout Hawaii and the Polynesian islands.

Surfing didn’t start to gain its larger popularity until the 1950s, thanks to the famous character “Gidget” and the emergence of surf music. A lifestyle was created and it has continued to expand and evolve over the years, along with the sport itself.

In the early days of modern surfing, it was common for surfers to ride the waves on large wooden boards, known as longboards. But as shorter boards were introduced, along with materials like fiberglass which could be aerodynamically shaped, surfers placed greater importance on acrobatic feats. New skills and standards followed.

Just as the surfboards themselves were modified and changed, the sport itself expanded beyond the waves. It spawned skateboarding, which was intially an alternative to surfing when the weather didn’t cooperate and create good waves. Wheels and skateboards allowed surfers to compensate for their missing adrenaline rush, and skateboarding quickly became a distinct sport of its own.

Mexico: a surfing paradise

Along Mexico’s Pacific coast, surfers of all skill levels will find many opportunities to take to the waves and practice their sport. Desinations such as Los Cabos, Ensenada and Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo offer the perfect beaches to vacation and to experience the exhilaration of surfing.

As you travel south along the coast from Tijuana, you’ll find “la Cuna del Surf en México” (or “The Cradle of Surfing in Mexico”) at San Miguel, a perfect beach in Ensenada, Baja California. Surfing was first introduced to Mexico at this beach, and both Ensenada (and its younger sister, Rosarito) are famous meeting points for surfers from all over the world, who seek to conquer “the perfect wave.”

Whether it’s your first time or you’re an experienced surfer, Ensenada is home to the right beach for your skills year-round. In the winter and spring, the more advanced surfers gravitate towards Los Barriles, from December to March, and Los Cerritos, from November to April, to challenge themselves on larger and faster waves. . True expert surfers will find everything they need in Monumento, where waves can surpass 6 feet throughout the year, except in December and January.

With a smooth, sandy seafloor, the beaches of Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo welcome surfers of all levels. Even better, waves are breaking all year long, so any month is a great time for a surfing vacation.
